There is no end if we discuss the world of computers, especially for those of us who need their daily use. Some people do not realize what components are on a computer, their roles, and how they work. One of them with VRAM.
Maybe we are familiar with the word RAM. However, does everyone know and understand about VRAM? VRAM or Video Random Access Memory stands for which is an important component for a laptop or computer.
Usually VRAM is used on a gamer's device. The way it works is almost similar to how RAM works, but RAM is usually used to store data coming from the CPU while VRAM is to store the Graphics Processing Unit.
For more details, let's look at the following discussion.
Definition of VRAM
Video Random Access Memory or VRAM is a component that is installed and installed on a video card in a manner similar to how RAM works. Although they have the same way of working, the two still have differences.
The way RAM works is to store data obtained from the Central Processing Unit or CPU. The difference with VRAM is that VRAM stores data obtained from the Graphical Processimg Unit.
Some of the data included in the VRAM data include textures, framebuffers, and assets. Which is to display the image on the monitor screen required rendering process using a video card.
VRAM History
In 1980, VRAM was originally invented by F. Dill, D. Ling., and R. Matick, which was later patented in 1985. Before VRAM was created, there was a dual-ported memory technology with a fairly high cost but limited quality.
Then a year later, to be precise in 1986, VRAM was introduced commercially by IBM on a PC or RT system. After that it is set as the standard used for graphical display.
Types of VRAM
VRAM is divided into four different types, each of which has different functions tailored to the needs of its users. Here are some types of VRAM, among others:
Synchronous Graphics RAM (SGRAM)
This type of VRAM can randomize video with synchronous time and according to the speed of the clock on the CPU. This type of VRAM has a relatively cheap price. It works by receiving data and then modifying it in one process, but not in the order of reading, writing, or upgrading.
Rambus Dynamic RAM (RDRAM)
This type of RDRAM VRAM was developed by Rambus, therefore it is called Rambus. RDRAM is a VRAM that has a fairly high speed and the fastest compared to others, especially in terms of data transfer that can reach 800 MHz.
There is a special bus on the RDRAM which is useful in speeding up the flow of data between the VRAM and the frame buffer.
Multibank Dynamic RAM (MDRAM)
MDRAM is a type of VRAM whose development is handled by MoSys. This type of VRAM has a fairly high price, with high performance, which is definitely worth the price. RDRAM will work by dividing the memory until it is divided into 32 Kb. After that each can be accessed separately.
Windows RAM (WRAM)
Even though it is called Windows, this type of VRAM has nothing to do with Microsoft. This type of VRAM has good performance and is quite high with a bandwidth of approximately 25% which is greater than the usual VRAM.
VRAM function
The VRAM functions that we need to know as well, as follows:
Saving Data
The first function of VRAM is to act as memory with the task of storing all graphic data available on the computer which is needed by the GPU before the rendering process takes place.
This is because the GPU has a better and higher speed in pulling data from VRAM compared to pulling data from the hard drive to the system RAM.
Has Dual Ported Technology
Dual-port VRAM technology which has the potential to write images that will be read by the video card so that it can be displayed on the computer screen.
When the image on the screen is still in the form of digital data, it will be processed on the GPU and then written using VRAM. Then it is converted to an analog signal which will later appear on the computer screen.
How to Add VRAM
Increase RAM Capacity
We can add VRAM capacity like adding RAM in the following way:
Click Start then Control Panel
Click Personalize
Click View
Change Display Settings
Advanced Settings
After that we can know the capacity of the VGA VRAM contained in the Special Video Memory
AMD Graphic Overdrive
AMD is an advantage that can support users who make software because of the extra performance on the Radeon GPU. Here's how:
Right-click on the desktop, then AMD Catalyst Control Center
Click Performance, then click AMD OverDrive
Click Accept license agreement
Click Configure Graphic OverDrive
Then the OverDrive Graphics checklist is activated
Then three options will appear, namely setting a high performance GPU clock, setting a high memory clock, and also enabling manual fan control
Click High Performance Memory Clock Settings to increase VRAM performance
Click Apply and the changes will take effect
Use of 3D Analyzer
3D Analyzer is very important because it will provide some memory space that comes from RAM by reducing the RAM capacity of the computer. Here are the steps:
We have to download 3D Analyzer first
Then we operate the 3D VGA Visual Analyzer
Then a column will appear on the right of the dialog box and we can choose according to our needs. After you have selected, click Finish and Run
Add Virtual Memory
Similar to the above uses, virtual memory will provide a certain amount of memory capacity that comes from hard disk memory space. Here's how:
1.Click Start, then right click for My Computer, click Properties
2. Select Advanced System Settings
3. Uncheck the option Manage file sizes
4. Click the drive that will later become virtual memory, it is highly recommended to select drive C
5. Next we can determine the virtual memory size
6. Click OK and restart the PC
