REPEATER
Repeater is a piece of hardware that is useful for extending the range of both wired and wireless LAN types. At first the repeater was used to combine segments of an ethernet cable. Repeater serves to receive a signal, then forward the received signal back with the same strength.
The repeater will amplify the signal before sending the signal to the next segment. This is because the signal will decrease the longer the cable is used. With a repeater, a signal from one computer can be sent to another computer that is far away.
The use of a repeater between two or more segments of a LAN cable requires the use of the same physical layer protocol between the cable segments, for example a repeater can connect two segments of a 10BASE2 ethernet cable.
Modern ethernet networks already use better or more sophisticated switching techniques so that these repeaters are rarely used. However, repeaters can still be found on wireless networks limited by Wi-Fi signals. The Wi-Fi repeater will pick up the signal from the router and then amplify the signal. So that the network coverage will be wider, and the wireless network coverage will increase.
BRIDGE
Bridge is one of the names of components of hardware on a computer network that has the function of connecting 2 network segments at the data link layer (layer 2) in the OSI model. The function of the bridge itself is actually the same as a repeater or hub, but it is better because the bridge works at the data link layer so that it has the ability to use MAC addresses in the process of sending frames to the intended address.
Bridge is able to separate part of the traffic because it implements the frame filtering mechanism. The mechanism that will be used in the bridge itself is generally referred to as store and forward. However, the broadcast traffic generated in the LAN cannot be filtered by the bridge. But with a bridge, data traffic from a network can be managed and not just rebroadcast
Bridges can also be used to connect networks that use different cable types or different topologies. Bidge can also find out the address of each computer from each network.
SWITCH
The switch is a concentrator, which is a device that unites network cables from each workstation, server or other device. A switch is a fairly small component that has the same function as a hub. Namely connecting devices to become one large network. Switches also have the same function as bridges.
The switch itself consists of several ports so the switch is called a multiport bridge. However, bridges and switches cannot forward IP packets that other computers represent on a logically different network
Unlike a hub, a switch is more able to assess the incoming data packets. The switch can also see the source and destination of the data, then forward the data correctly. By sending messages to the destination device, the switch will reduce data collisions, and finally the speed of data transactions can be greater than if using a hub
